Birth

BIRTH

he Building in the photo is Germany’s first nuclear research reactor that started its activity in 1957. The reactor has been designed by the Architect Gerhard Weber who was a student of Mies van der Rohe at Bauhaus. The negative of the photo has been exposed to radioactive material from a mine which sourced nuclear fuel for that reactor. The radiation leaves white traces on the negative, erasing the image, thus the image makes the invisible radioactivity visible. Its title, Birth, refers to its egg-shaped form that throughout different cultures is associated with fertility, growth, and renewal, thus contrasting its destructive content.
