Birth

BIRTH

In 1957, Germany´s first nuclear research reactor began operation, a structure designed by the renowned Architect Gerhard Weber, a student of Mies van der Rohe at the iconic Bauhaus school. For the artwork Birth a negative of the photograph of the reactor was exposed to radioactive sand samples, the radiation leaves behind a trail of ethereal white traces on the negative, obscuring parts of the photograph and making the invisible radioactivity visible to the viewer. The egg-shaped form of the reactor, a symbol of fertility and renewal in many cultures, serves as a poignant contrast to the destructive forces at play within its walls. Birth invites us to consider the hidden within our world, the fragile balance between creation and destruction.
